Little Girls Dresses

I just finished one dress for two of my little cousins. The first one is for a 4 year-old and the second dress is for a 2 month-old. I sent them off in the mail today so hopefully they will get them tomorrow or Friday, giving me enough time to make each one a second dress as well as another little cousin a dress before I go home next week.

I was going to add a diaper cover to the infant dress, but I didn't have enough material so this dress is without one. Maybe the next one.

Sewing for Others

I have been feeling led by the Lord to sew for other people as well as myself. Something I want to focus on is helping those who either can't find modest skirts or dresses to wear or don't have the finances to buy the modest clothes they need.

I do not have a serger sewing machine, but I do zig zag my seams to help keep the fabric from fraying (especially when working with denim).

Latest sewing project :)

I have been wanting a "card" holder (for gift cards and those annoying "rewards" cards you have to have for nearly every store now), but not like a wallet (I already have one of those which is too full!!)... So I made one. I think it turned out pretty good.

I had this fabric left over from a sewing project that I am working on for my sister's very late birthday present. I had the batting as well and "quilted" the two fabrics and batting together with the machine. I just went from there, I know, a horrible explanation, but if anyone is interested, I will give a better one :)

Blessings by strangers :)

As of late here I can tell people are getting into a giving mood :) It makes me so joyous! It started off simply by someone buying our meals at Wendy's, yes, it was $4 or so total, but it is still a kind jesture! Then on Friday at work my roommate had THREE packages delievered!! Guess what were in them?! FOOD!! It is such a relief to know that we will not need to take care of groceries for a while to come :) Many churches in our area give food to families or people they feel need the help or deserve it.

I don't post this as to brag at all, but rather to remind us the reason for this wonderful season! How will you pay it forward and spread the kindness that Jesus taught us to show? I haven't decided yet, maybe the next time I am at a fast food place I will pay for someone's meal, who knows, I am sure the Lord will show me what He would like for me to do!

Side note: If anyone is trying to sew their own dresses or aprons and would like some guidance, I am happy to try to help :) I have made several dresses and am feeling better about each one that I make... the last one I made for myself, I am willing to say I made it! HUGE step lol :D

Q & A

I recently got a few questions from someone and instead of replying just to her, I thought I would post it on my blog.

"How amazing Chelsea! Only recently, (though I have felt this way for years), I’ve been convicted to dress plainly and finally bought my first cape dress and plain-style apron patterns. Slowly, I'm trying to change over my wardrobe to fit what I feel YHWH is calling me to wear.

Please, if you don't mind answering a curious girls questions, where did you purchase your cape dress pattern? What colours do you personally consider plain? I'm not sure right now if wearing kapps is right for me (I've got a lot of hair and that makes the styles available to me difficult to wear) but I'm not sure what else there is. Right now I'm not feeling any leadings towards any particular covering so I'm not going to change until I do. Do you only wear kapps?"

I was lucky enough to be given my cape dress pattern by a friend. I did not have to purchase one. It may of been easier if I had because I would not of had to alter the pattern, but it saved me money. Where I am, that is how most women do it. Find someone of comprable size at their church, ask to try a dress on, and if it fits ask to copy the pattern the other lady uses. One of my friends had an old pattern and a dress for me to try on and it fit for the most part so that is how I got my pattern.

I myself do not focus on what colors to wear and what colors not to wear. For church I have some more subdued colors, such as darker greens, sage greens, blues, and one gray dress, but for my everyday dress I pick material up that appeals me. It usually is a green (I love orange and greens) and has a pattern to it. The patterns I find in my area are small patterns. Similar to this one.



My thoughts on what style of covering to wear is wear what you feel called to wear. Do not worry about what may be the "right" covering as Paul did not specify what kind women are to wear, only that we are to wear a covering. I have thick hair, my hair is to the bottom of my shoulder blades so it's not super long yet. There are ways to make your bun flat, here is a link to different ways to make your bun. I wear both veils and kapps, but when I buy kapps I have to look for ones that are extra deep or else my kapps sit further back, but with my behind-the-ears kapps I do not mind them sitting further back... I don't like them over my ears :)

The Lord is my...

My roommate absolutely loved her dress. But me on the otherhand, ugh. There are so many things about it I wish she would let me fix, but she doesn't care :) I have much higher standards on how my clothing and kapps look than she does...or maybe we should say I have a much more detailed eye when it comes to these things! I am comparing the dress I made her to the one I made with her help and the one I made with her help fits so much better, but she loves this one anyway. Guess I need to let it go eh?

My first dress I absolutely hate. I don't think I will ever wear it. The pattern I used didn't get adjusted enough so I had about an inch of extra material on each side from my torso through my hips. I tried to fix it simply by taking in the seams last night but now the seams aren't even and it's visible to the eye. Another thing is I apparantly needed to put darts in the back of my dress (even though the pattern didn't tell me to) because it just hangs there and I hate how it looks/feels on me. Oh well. My roommate said she would fix it for me so I guess I will see how it turns out in the very end.

SURPRISE!!!!!

For my roommate that is :) She has been wanting a wine colored dress for some time now. I bought the material last Tuesday and between yesterday and today I completely made it!! I just hope it fits her because she didn't try it on at all like she did with the last one I made her :)



I am about half way done with a dress for myself, but I have no motivation to do it anymore :) I truly hate hems and that is where I am with my dress. Oh well :) It will get done eventually!

Dress Pattern

I have a pattern! Oh boy am I excited :) I still need to alter it a little bit as it is a tad too big for me, but now I can start to make my own dresses! Yes, I am meaning cape dresses. I have been feeling called to wear cape dresses, but I certainly do not believe that it is the only way to dress modestly :) Every once in a while I will still wear a skirt and modest shirt, but I am learning to like my dresses. Kind of different for me since in the beginning I really did not like dresses, I almost felt like I had no bottom on!! Silly feeling I know, but the way the skirts are so loose and the waist are on my dresses I don't feel them -- giving me the feeling of an absent skirt :) My goal for tonight is to finish my roommate's dress so then I can start on one for myself tomorrow!

New Things!

So this one is kind of random :) I am going to make a skirt out of one of the pairs of jeans that I loved when I was wearing pants! I already have them pulled apart, I just have to get the eyelet that I want to use to insert in the gap and then I should be good. I'm excited to try this and when I finish, I will definitely post pictures!

But anyway, another small thing. Remember those hats that I was knitting? Well I dropped them off at the local women's hospital and she said that they can always use incubator quilts too...so I'm going to have a friend teach me to quilt and we're going to make a few I think! Another thing for me to learn. I know...maybe odd that I don't know how to quilt...but that's not something we did at home. Nor was canning. I have quite a bit to learn I think!!
